Ceiba is starting construction of an underground electrical system on its main street in the town center, a $5.3 million project that will modernize 1,340 linear feet of the avenue, from Carlos Figueroa Street to Federico Fontánez Street. To mark the start of work, Mayor Samuel Rivera Báez met with merchants in the construction area to explain the project’s phases, temporary traffic changes and how the work will be coordinated to reduce the impact on their businesses.
Engineers and contractors in charge of the project gave technical details and answered merchants’ questions about the construction process, access to establishments and traffic management. The project calls for burying the cables and the electrical and telecommunications lines, eliminating overhead wiring in the area, along with reconstruction and modernization of pedestrian and road infrastructure. According to the mayor, the work will proceed in five phases of an estimated 45 to 60 days each, for a total of roughly 15 months of construction.
Rivera Báez said the municipality will keep constant communication with merchants and will notify businesses 14 days before construction reaches their block. "This is one of those projects that mark a before and after for our town," he said, describing a modern, safe, accessible and resilient avenue that strengthens the urban center and local commerce.
