Why this matters: For Puerto Rico’s surf community, hosting the Surfing PRO 2026 brings international attention and competition experience to local athletes, potentially boosting their chances to qualify for global events like the 2027 Pan American Games.

The international surf scene will focus on Arecibo’s La Marginal beach for the next two weeks with the third edition of the Surfing PRO 2026, featuring two events with a total of $106,000 in prizes and representatives from 25 countries. The first competition, the ALAS Tour, will take place this weekend with 230 athletes and a $40,000 prize purse, and will award a spot in the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, for both men and women.

The second event, a World Surf League (WSL) qualifying stop, will be held from October 14 to 18 with 178 surfers and $66,000 in prizes. Puerto Rico is looking to make a mark on the global surf circuit, with around 10 local athletes competing, including Havanna Cabrero and Faviola Alcalá, who are the country’s top female surfers.

According to Oscar Martínez, president of the Puerto Rico Surfing Federation, Cabrero and Alcalá are the closest to qualifying for the 2027 Pan American Games and the world circuit. The events are supported by the municipality of Arecibo and its mayor, Carlos Ramírez Irizarry. International surfers attending the event include Kolohe Andino from California, Bryan Pérez from El Salvador, and Dominic 'Mimi' Barona from Ecuador.
