Waterspout Spotted Off Salinas Coast

Published Oct 7, 2026, 4:30 PM ASTvia WAPA TV

A waterspout was spotted around 12:40 PM on October 7 off the coast of Salinas. The waterspout lasted several minutes and dissipated upon touching land in the Villa Esperanza area. Citizens captured videos of the waterspout from the Playa community.

According to the EcoExploratorio: Museo de Ciencias, a waterspout is a tornado that forms over the ocean or sea instead of on land. Waterspouts are not officially recorded as tornadoes unless the rotating air funnel touches land. They are typically smaller and weaker than tornadoes, follow a vertical direction, and are usually gray in color, turning yellowish when illuminated by the sun.

After forming, waterspouts increase in size and usually last about half an hour before dissipating.
