Why this matters: For drivers in Puerto Rico, particularly those who frequent the PR-172 in Caguas, the incident highlights the need for increased vigilance when stopping at gas stations and parking areas, especially at night or in poorly lit areas.

A driver was the victim of a carjacking early Friday morning in Caguas, when two armed individuals took his vehicle at an EcoMaxx gas station on PR-172, according to the Puerto Rico Police. The incident occurred at around 3:14 AM after the man parked his 2023 gray Kia Rio, with license plate KGO-074, at the station.

Two individuals got out of a wine-colored Hyundai Tucson and, using intimidation and threats with a firearm, stole the vehicle. The suspects then left the scene. The victim did not suffer physical harm.

Agents from the Robbery Division of the Criminal Investigations Corps are handling the investigation. The FBI advises drivers to stay alert while driving and when arriving at parking lots and areas with poor lighting to avoid being a carjacking victim. If a suspicious vehicle or person approaches, it recommends continuing to drive and avoiding stopping.

If you are a victim of a carjacking, do not confront the assailants or try to resist.
