The Office of the Procurator for Older Persons, led by Yolanda Varela, distributed $100 food cards to nearly 300 elderly residents in San Juan on Monday. According to Victor Parés, these cards, which are funded with federal funds for food assistance and can be used at Supermercados Econo, will help elderly individuals purchase the food they need for nutrition.
San Juan has 109,410 people aged 65 or older, and the US Census estimates that 27.4% of the island’s population, or around 830,000 people, are elderly. Varela stated that the federal funds have an important purpose: to address the food needs of the elderly and contribute to their well-being and quality of life. The Office will continue working to ensure these resources reach those who need them and provide direct aid to the elderly population.
The food cards are part of an assistance line that will allow the elderly to acquire the necessary food for their nutrition.
