Why this matters: The public wake will provide a space for Puerto Ricans to pay their respects to a legendary figure in the sport of boxing, who brought pride and recognition to the island through his achievements.

The San Juan municipality is finalizing arrangements for a public wake for multiple world boxing champion Wilfredo Gómez, to be held on Thursday, October 15, at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum. Official activities will begin at 10:00 AM and will include messages from those close to Gómez, such as San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo, as well as representatives from the World Boxing Organization (WBO), Francisco Valcárcel and Gustavo Olivieri.

A guard of honor will also be present. Gómez, who was hospitalized for respiratory complications for approximately two weeks before his death, had a record of 44 wins, 42 by knockout, with three losses and one draw. He was a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York, and won championships in three divisions.
