The San Juan Municipal Legislature announced a public hearing on July 29 to discuss an ordinance authorizing the construction of a multipurpose parking lot in the lot facing Escambrón Beach. The project, proposed by the company Smart Parking System, aims to expand the current parking space from 250 to 950 vehicles through the construction of a vertical multipurpose parking lot.
The ordinance would grant the company a surface right for up to 60 years, renewable for an additional 30 years. San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero requested the removal of the discussion from the agenda due to opposition from community organizations, but the Legislature decided to hold public hearings.
The public hearing will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the Municipal Legislature's Session Hall, and those interested in commenting on the project can do so in writing by July 30 via email to mesantiago@sanjuan.pr. The project has generated controversy, with opponents arguing it would worsen traffic and harm the environment.
