Why this matters: The new leadership of the Puerto Rico Bankers Association is expected to impact the island’s financial sector and economic development, with a focus on accessible banking and consumer education.

In Puerto Rico, Jorge García, the president and chief executive officer of Popular, Inc., was elected president of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Bankers Association (Asociación de Bancos de Puerto Rico, ABPR) for a term that will run until 2028. García has over two decades of experience in various executive positions at Popular, including vice president and chief financial officer.

The election took place during the organization’s Annual Assembly, where Maritza Abadía, president of Banesco USA in Puerto Rico, was also selected as vice president of the Board, and Johnny Pérez Crespo, president and chief executive officer of the Puerto Rico Cooperative Bank, was chosen as treasurer. García stated that his priorities include promoting accessible and innovative banking, strengthening collaboration with other sectors, and contributing to Puerto Rico’s economic development.

The ABPR will continue its initiatives related to strengthening the financial system, consumer education, and fraud prevention during the new Board’s term.
