In Puerto Rico, Representative Denis Márquez of the Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño (PIP) warned that the government could privatize the ports of San Juan and Ponce for temporary electricity generation projects. This information comes after examining documents as part of an investigation by the Government Commission. Márquez stated in a letter to the commission presidents that two temporary generation projects recommended by the Oficina Independiente de Compras por Terceros (3PPO) involved the possible privatization of ports to supply gas.
One project, by Power Expectations, would construct infrastructure for gas supply from the port of Ponce, with a certification from the Autoridad del Puerto de Ponce confirming the port’s capacity to accommodate the operation. Márquez also claimed that the Autoridad de los Puertos gave New Fortress control of a port area where it built a gas terminal without final federal authorization, as safety and emergency response plans have not been completed.
Márquez expressed his concerns about the possible privatization of the ports in a letter sent on Friday to the commission presidents.
