Why this matters: The decision allows Baeza Visaldán to resume his role with the Capitanes de Arecibo, a prominent basketball team in Puerto Rico.

In Puerto Rico, San Juan Court Judge Obdulio Meléndez determined there was no cause to pursue charges against José Manuel Baeza Visaldán, owner of the Capitanes de Arecibo basketball team, related to the Domestic Violence Law, his lawyers announced. The decision was made during a preliminary hearing on Monday, October 12, 2026, and resulted in Baeza Visaldán’s immediate release from jail, where he had been held since September 22.

His attorneys, José Andréu Fuentes and Alfredo Umpierre Soler, stated that they were able to demonstrate the allegations against Baeza Visaldán were untrue, and they expect him to resume his professional duties. Baeza Visaldán became the team’s owner in November 2022 after reaching an agreement to acquire the franchise.
