Why this matters: For law students in Puerto Rico, this conversation provides a unique opportunity to engage with notarial practice and understand the different perspectives involved in evaluating public documents, which can inform their future careers in law.

In Puerto Rico, students from the three law schools participated in a conversation about notarial practice, analyzing the different perspectives of the notary, inspector, and property registrar in evaluating public documents. The event, held on October 7, was organized by the Puerto Rico Notarial College, with the support of its student chapters in Ponce, Río Piedras, and Hato Rey, said Executive Director Virmarily Pacheco.

The main event was held at the Interamerican University’s Law School in Hato Rey, with participation from the Pontifical Catholic University in Ponce via Zoom. Students from the University of Puerto Rico were also present, as well as Professor Edwin Renán. The property registrar Ismael L. Purcell Soler joined from Ponce, while notary Melvin Quiñonez Medina and inspector José Santiago Rodríguez participated in person in Hato Rey.

The deans of Interamerican and Pontifical universities sent messages, and a congratulatory message was received from the Senate through Senator Ángel Toledo, chair of the Legal Commission, on the occasion of Puerto Rico Notary Day. As part of the conversation, students and professionals evaluated a power of attorney, a sales contract, and marital agreements, discussing common errors and suggestions for improvement.

Pacheco emphasized the importance of considering the will of the parties involved and configuring the legal requirements of the business, rather than just trying to pass an inspection. The goal of the activity is also to motivate students to pursue a career in notarial law without fear, added Pacheco.
