PIP’s Dalmau Calls for a Broad Country Alliance to Defeat Bipartisanship

Why this matters: For Puerto Rican voters weighing the 2026 landscape, the PIP is openly courting an alliance beyond Victoria Ciudadana aimed at unseating the PNP-PPD duopoly that Dalmau blames for the island’s fiscal and governance crisis.

Under the motto "De la lucha a la victoria" (From struggle to victory), the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) held its General Assembly on Sunday, October 18, in Ponce. At the event, party leader Juan Dalmau called for reviving a country alliance that would not be limited to the members of Victoria Ciudadana, but would include anyone who believes in the possibility of defeating bipartisanship and, in his words, "cleaning house."

Dalmau questioned the leadership of the New Progressive Party (PNP) and its efforts in favor of statehood, saying the PNP leadership claims to be pro-statehood but "asks on the plush cushions of the colony." He also lashed out at the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), stating that those who back the colonial system also back the Oversight Board.

"The collapse Puerto Rico suffers has a first and last name: popular and PNP bipartisanship," Dalmau said. The independence leader blamed bipartisanship for governance problems and the handling of public funds, as well as for the limitations he says the cabotage laws impose and for deficiencies in Puerto Rico’s economic development.
