Lee Conmigo Marks Four Years: Over 55,000 Children Across Puerto Rico Reached

Why this matters: Families in the San Juan metro area have a free specialized early-childhood library with over 5,500 Spanish-language children’s books, and a $25,000 October drive determines how many more of Puerto Rico’s young readers it can reach.

Lee Conmigo, an organization with a children’s library specialized in early childhood at San Patricio Plaza, will celebrate its fourth anniversary on Sunday with a free family event in front of the library, on the ground floor of San Patricio Plaza, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. Over four years, the organization has impacted more than 55,000 families who have visited the library, has more than 850 active members, and those members have borrowed 60,000 books to take home. The anniversary event is part of the library’s annual fundraising campaign, which runs through all of October with a goal of $25,000 and the slogan 'Reading transforms lives.

Your donation makes it possible.' The event will feature music, a show by Circo Teatro Bandada, and a read-aloud of children’s stories before singing happy birthday with the children present. Executive director Gianlee Márquez Hernández thanked the hundreds of families who attend the library and said donations create opportunities for children to discover books and develop a positive relationship with reading.

Cofounder Juan Carlos Acevedo Gándara, noting the organization has promoted children’s reading since 2019, said supporting Puerto Rico’s children requires fostering reading from the earliest years. The library holds more than 5,500 Spanish-language children’s books plus an English section and a 'bebeteca' for children under 2, and operates Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM, and Sundays, 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Donations can be delivered at the library or via ATH Móvil, checks, or its online platform.
