  • PICSI said ICE agents arrived at a domino tournament in Villa Hugo, Canóvanas, Saturday shortly after 5:00 PM, in a caravan of 12 unmarked vehicles and demanded ID from people with darker skin and foreign accents.
  • ICE agents raided Barrio Obrero in Santurce on Sunday, where Feminist Collective members defending the community were threatened with stun devices and pepper spray.
  • ACLU president Annette Martínez Orabona said ICE is making warrantless arrests, separating families and interfering with ongoing immigration processes.

Why this matters: ICE operations are spreading beyond San Juan into Canóvanas communities served by community groups, scaring immigrant residents away from organizing around local problems like water access, housing and health services.

The San Isidro Community Integration Project (PICSI) denounced Monday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents disrupted a domino tournament the organization had scheduled for the weekend in the Villa Hugo and Valle Hill communities of Canóvanas. According to PICSI attorney Nicole Díaz, the incident occurred Saturday shortly after 5:00 PM, when a caravan of 12 unmarked vehicles arrived outside the business 'La Reja' in Villa Hugo, where the event was set to take place.

It was evident they were discriminating against people with darker skin and a foreign accent,

She said neighbors sounded the alarm around 4:30 PM that immigration agents were nearby and had already taken a resident, and that heavily armed agents then began demanding identification from people seated at the tables. 'It was evident they were discriminating against people with darker skin and a foreign accent,' Díaz said, adding that some agents had carried out interventions she described as violent earlier that day in Barrio Obrero, Villa Palmeras and Capetillo. She argued the operations have increased immigrant households’ vulnerability and hindered community organizing efforts.

ICE agents also raided Barrio Obrero in Santurce on Sunday, where Feminist Collective members defended residents and were threatened with stun devices and pepper spray. ACLU president Annette Martínez Orabona rejected the ICE deployment, calling its policy clearly discriminatory.
