San Juan mayor Miguel Romero Lugo appeared Sunday alongside Spain’s King Felipe VI at the Palacio de Zarzuela in Madrid, as part of the closing of the Encuentro de Ciudades Iberoamericanas. According to a post on the mayor’s Facebook account, Romero Lugo and other municipal leaders from different countries handed the king a document gathering the priorities and commitments the cities share to address their challenges.
The mayor thanked King Felipe VI for receiving them, for his interest in the work being done from their cities, and for what he described as the king’s longstanding affection for San Juan. Romero Lugo’s participation in the Madrid event came just days after the U.S. Department of State denied a visa allowing Ada Colau, former mayor of Barcelona and a candidate for the Spanish presidency, to enter Puerto Rico to take part in the Ciudades Valientes event in Caguas.
