Why this matters: For Puerto Rico’s para-athletes, individualized clinical and performance testing with Universidad Central del Caribe adds training resources ahead of the November 13 Paralympic Cup and the next Paralympic cycle.

Puerto Rican para table tennis athletes Shaquille Rivera and Kevin Rivera, who will compete in the Paralympic Cup on November 13 in Canóvanas, took part in a day of clinical evaluations and physical performance tests for members of the Para Table Tennis Federation of Puerto Rico, aimed at strengthening their preparation for that event and future national and international commitments. The evaluations, carried out in collaboration with Universidad Central del Caribe and led by chiropractor Ángel Ríos, seek to identify areas of physical improvement and give athletes tools to optimize performance.

Kevin Rivera, who competes in class 10, called the resource excellent for the federation’s preparation, while Shaquille Rivera, a class 9 Paralympic athlete, took the tests to learn more about his physical condition. Federation president Ángel Miguel Arroyo highlighted the value of new resources and alliances and said the federation hopes these athletes can represent Puerto Rico in international competitions in the future.

The event is also a platform to integrate new athletes into the Paralympic movement through a collaboration agreement between the Department of Education and the Puerto Rico Paralympic Committee to ease their incorporation into sports federations.
