Puerto Rico ranks third among United States jurisdictions in the share of homes with solar panels installed, with 16% of residential properties out of a universe of 1.6 million homes, according to a publication by the Institute of Statistics citing the Census Community Survey for 2025. Nationally, only 5.2% of homes have solar panels. Only Hawaii (30.4%) and California (17.1%) surpass Puerto Rico.
As of 2025, a total of 260,820 homes in Puerto Rico had solar panels. The Census does not specify whether the 1.6 million homes include apartments where solar systems cannot be installed. Separately, El Nuevo Día recently reported that net-metering installations with LUMA Energy fell by more than 60% when comparing April to September of 2025 with the same period in 2026.
On electric vehicles, 2.3% of homes on the island have at least one, below the 5.9% rate in the United States. California (15%), Washington (9.6%) and Hawaii (9.1%) lead that category in the United States.
