At a glance

  • LUMA filed its rate readjustment request with the Energy Bureau on October 15, covering November and December
  • Energy Bureau president Edison Avilés Deliz said the petition is under evaluation and commissioners may hold a hearing, decline it, or postpone the discussion
  • The request is tied to the September reconciliations for the fuel charge and energy purchase adjustments

Why this matters: Household power bills on the island are set through this mechanism, so a granted readjustment would raise what customers pay in November and December, on top of earlier fuel charge increases.

LUMA Energy has asked the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau to "readjust" electricity rates for November and December, citing an alleged multimillion-dollar deviation in its projections for energy purchases and fuel costs. As published by El Vocero, LUMA filed the request on October 15 as part of an informative motion on the September reconciliations for the fuel charge adjustment and the purchased-power charge.

Energy Bureau chair Edison Avilés Deliz said, through a spokesperson, that the request "is under evaluation." The spokesperson added that the commissioners, if necessary, can call a hearing, but they can also decline to take it up or postpone the discussion until the next reconciliation. In its filing, LUMA stated that it made the request as part of its responsibilities under the contract to manage and operate the transmission and distribution system, which includes preparing the reconciliations.
