Judge Alba Calderón Cestero of the Arecibo court found probable cause for arrest on Friday against a 75-year-old man accused in a traffic accident that killed a paramedic in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico. The accused, Ángel Luis Figueroa Vargas, faces one charge of gross recklessness or negligence under Article 5.07(c) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law.
According to the Puerto Rico Police Bureau, the accident occurred on April 9 at kilometer 97.7 of PR-2 in the Cocos neighborhood of Quebradillas. Investigators said Figueroa Vargas was driving a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer when he allegedly made a turn without taking proper precautions and struck a 2022 Suzuki motorcycle. The motorcyclist, Amid Molina Morales, 53, a paramedic with the State Emergency Medical Services Bureau, died at the Metro Pavía hospital in Arecibo.
After evaluating the evidence, the judge set bail at $10,000, which Figueroa Vargas posted, and placed him under electronic monitoring with an ankle bracelet until the next hearing. Agent José L. Rivera Mercado of the Arecibo Highway Patrol Division investigated the accident, and prosecutor José Acevedo Acevedo filed the charge.
