The Ponce court found probable cause for the arrest of a man accused of scamming someone through a fake kidnapping, the Puerto Rico Police Bureau reported. The suspect was identified as Ángel L. Pérez Acevedo, 37, a resident of San Juan. According to the investigation, the suspect called the victim on October 28 and told him that his daughter had been kidnapped and that, in exchange for her rescue, he had to hand over $10,000.

The case was investigated by agents of the Criminal Investigations Corps of Ponce and was consulted with prosecutor Alexandra Cardín, who ordered charges filed for fraud and aggravated illegal appropriation. After evaluating the evidence, Judge Laudelino F. Mulero, of the Ponce court, found probable cause and set total bail at $14,000. After posting bail through a private bondsman, Pérez Acevedo was released on conditional liberty until his preliminary hearing, scheduled for November 10.
