Why this matters: Five guns off the streets after a shots-fired call in the capital points to the security concerns around late-night businesses in San Juan’s Borinquen Avenue corridor.

The Municipal Police of San Juan seized five firearms during an early-morning intervention at the business La Fría VIP on Borinquen Avenue in San Juan, Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo reported. The action began after a call reporting gunshots in the area came in at around 4:15 AM. When municipal and state agents arrived, two motorcycles sped off while shots were being fired; agents pursued them, but the occupants escaped.

While authorities remained in the area, a woman confidentially told a municipal agent that friends of hers were inside the establishment and were allegedly not allowed to leave, and that armed individuals were inside. At about 6:05 AM, an individual opened the door of the business and, according to preliminary information, punched a Municipal Police sergeant, and was arrested.

Municipal Police Commissioner Juan Jackson said agents responded to the shooting complaint, kept control of the scene and coordinated with the Puerto Rico Police. Agents of the Impact Unit entered and seized two rifles and a pistol, and two vehicles were also seized after firearms were observed in plain sight inside, bringing the total to five guns.

The business was fined for Public Order Code violations and will be referred to the Permit Office for evaluation. Authorities will keep investigating the shots, the seized weapons and the other events of the early morning.
