The Cabo Rojo Savings and Credit Cooperative (Cabo Rojo Coop) closed its celebration of Cooperativism Month by investing $8,000 in scholarships for 40 young people in Puerto Rico. The cooperative awarded 20 scholarships of $200 each to students from ninth to twelfth grade enrolled in schools in the region, and 10 scholarships of $400 each to university students.
Kerwin A. Morales Rivera, the cooperative’s chief executive, said investing in young people’s education is investing in the future of their communities and that each scholarship represents a message of confidence in their abilities and potential. The scholarship presentation capped a month of activities. These included the tenth edition of the Cabo Rojo Coop charity 5K, which set a participation record with 1,341 runners and benefited two young people facing serious health conditions.
The cooperative also held a vaccination fair promoting health prevention and care, and made a charitable visit to the Hogar San Andrés in Mayagüez as part of its support for vulnerable populations. Morales Rivera said cooperativism goes beyond offering financial products and services, calling it a philosophy of serving and sharing that commits the cooperative to having a positive impact.
