Democrat Brian Schwalb was reelected on Tuesday as attorney general of Washington, D.C., widely defeating Puerto Rican Republican Manuel Rivera. In the heavily Democratic capital, Schwalb won 92.3% of the vote (139,171 votes), while Rivera, who said he ran to promote Puerto Rico’s independence among Republicans, received 7%. It was the first time Republicans fielded a candidate for D.C. attorney general.
Two Puerto Rican Republicans also lost their bids for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia. Tony Sabio lost in the eighth district of northern Virginia, where Democratic Congressman Don Beyer was reelected with 78% of the vote; Beyer won with 71.5% in 2024. Sabio received 18.6%.
Edwin Rivera lost in the third district of southeastern Virginia to Democratic Congressman Robert Scott, who took 72.7% of the vote to Rivera’s 23.5%.
