Former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora says he is taking a break from organized baseball to stay in Puerto Rico with his family, five months after leaving the Red Sox job in April. Several franchises approached the Puerto Rican manager after his departure seeking his services, but he remained firm in his decision to pause his career and spend time with his children.
Cora, who spoke at a press conference where he was announced as spokesperson for the Foundation for the Future of Health, a nonprofit that seeks to retain and attract medical talent to strengthen Puerto Rico’s health system, made clear he will not manage in 2027. Still, he acknowledged interest from several teams and said his return to the majors is not in his hands.
"That is not my decision; something I have heard all summer is that Alex will get this team or that one. That is decided by the executives of the other teams. This year, as a family, we let many people know I was not going to work, that I am staying in Puerto Rico with the family. We’ll see what happens over the next year," Cora said.
Away from big league ballparks, he remains active at local fields: his twins play soccer and baseball, and he has been involved in their development.
