A prisoner at the 728 Correctional Institution in Sabana Hoyos, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, faces new charges after Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DCR) staff allegedly seized fentanyl and synthetic marijuana from him. According to police, the substances were seized from Efraín Rivera Pérez, 36, on the afternoon of October 9. Prosecutor Ariel Chico Juarbe filed two charges against Rivera Pérez for violations of the Controlled Substances Act and one for possessing and/or bringing contraband into a penal institution.
Judge Rafael Lugo Morales of the Arecibo court found probable cause for arrest on all three charges and set bail at $60,000. After that ruling, the defendant was returned to the Sabana Hoyos correctional institution. The preliminary hearing was scheduled for November 23.
