A large group of judges and lawyers of Puerto Rican origin who practice in New York courts took part for the first time in the traditional "Day of Achievements" (Día de Logros), held as part of Puerto Rican Heritage Month and bringing together the Puerto Rico delegation that travels annually to the Puerto Rican Week activities in New York City. The gathering at the Capitol also brought together mayors, legislators, businesspeople and leaders from both the United States and Puerto Rico.
The judges present were Wanda Y. Negron (judge of Bronx County Court), Lumarie Maldonado Cruz (judge of the Supreme Court of New York’s Judicial District), Karina Alomar (presiding judge of the Queens NY Criminal Court), Carmen A. Pacheco (supervising judge of the New York State Unified Court System), Betty Lugo Martínez (senior judge of Bronx County Civil Court) and Patrick Hayes Torres (judge of the Civil Court of Kings County in New York City). Members of the Puerto Rican Bar Association of New York were to join the event, led by its president Lillian Mosley along with attorneys Olga Arandia, Yomaira Martin, Roberto Martínez, Ángel Cruz, Valeria Ortiz and Lissett Ferreira.
Wilson Nazario, executive director of the Puerto Rico delegation, said anyone taking part this year receives the delegation’s official badge and pin, making them a lifetime member of the group that participates in the National Puerto Rican Day Parade on Fifth Avenue.
