Puerto Rico Senate Member Anticipates New Referrals Against Family Department Secretary Suzanne Roig

Why this matters: The outcome of the Fundación SAMU award and the NOLA Education contract investigation touches how Family Department funds are awarded on the island, a concern for families who depend on its services.

Puerto Rico’s Department of the Families Secretary Suzanne Roig could face new referrals next week before the Department of Justice and the Office of the Comptroller over alleged irregularities in the proposal evaluation process that favored Fundación SAMU, PNP Senator Juan Oscar Morales anticipated on Thursday. The senator explained that 10 proponents participated in the selection process, but not all were evaluated under the same criteria. 'Nine of them were given scores by three different evaluators.

Only one was evaluated by two people, which placed her at a disadvantage,' the legislator said. Morales argued that if the proposal evaluated by only two people had received an additional score similar to the average given by the other evaluators, it could have surpassed Fundación SAMU and changed the outcome of the award. The possible referrals arise amid the investigation being carried out by the Senate Family Committee related to the NOLA Education contract.
