Puerto Rico Weightlifting Federation Opens Lima 2027 Training with 30 Athletes

Why this matters: With only two lifters per branch training full time and the rest scattered between Spain, Florida and the mainland US, the federation’s November 14 call-up in Caguas is where Puerto Rico’s Lima 2027 and Los Angeles 2028 pipeline will be built.

The Puerto Rico Weightlifting Federation has set out its training plan ahead of the Pan American Games in Lima 2027, scheduled for July 23 to August 8, 2027, in Lima and Callao, Peru. Work begins on Saturday, November 14 at the Caguas Municipal Gymnasium in the Ángel O. Berríos Sports Complex in Caguas. National coach Gregorio Pérez said the federation identified lifters and contacted their leagues to call them in, expecting about 30 athletes.

The sessions will also include youth lifters, whom Pérez said should grow accustomed to the generational change and learn how the processes work for their future. The effort continues through the rest of 2026, with the first selective trial set for January 2027 and the first federation target the Pan American Championship in March or April.

Pérez said only two athletes in each branch currently train full time: Issi Agrait, in a permanent training camp in Spain; Asia González, who works in the state of Florida; Luis Jaime González, who works in Puerto Rico; and Alejandro Medina, also in the United States. Pérez said Medina has already registered the marks required for the Pan American Games but must achieve them in an official competition.

The 30 lifters, from the federation’s 13 leagues, begin between 9:00 and 9:30 AM. The federation celebrated Agrait’s appearance the previous week at the IWF World Championship in China, where she competed at 61 kilograms with lifts of 91 kg in the snatch and 110 kg in the clean and jerk for a 201 kg total. The World Championship was the first event in the weightlifting qualification process for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
