Econo Supermarket Chain Denies Social Media Rumors That It Will Close

Published Nov 7, 2026, 4:25 PM ASTvia El Nuevo Día

Why this matters: With 63 stores already operating, Econo’s denial keeps Puerto Rico’s largest supermarket chain in place for the households that depend on it for groceries, while its planned store 64 in Yabucoa and further openings in 2027 point to continued hiring and retail investment on the island.

Econo, described as the main supermarket chain in Puerto Rico, called a hoax the information circulating on social media about a supposed closure of the chain starting December 24. In a statement sent to El Nuevo Día, the chain "categorically" denied any information pointing to a closure. "We ask our consumers and the general public not to pay attention to it," the statement says.

Econo is the third company this week to be the target of rumors about store closures. The rumors arose after KFC and Taco Bell restaurants closed their doors unexpectedly on Monday, November 2, once their parent company Yum! Brands broke its relationship with Encanto Restaurants, the operator on the island.

The hamburger chain Wendy’s was forced to deny similar rumors on social media. Church’s Chicken, a competitor of KFC, also rejected that it is considering closing locations. Both chains reiterated that they will open new locations or are recruiting staff.

Econo said it communicates through its official social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, X). The chain said it is preparing to open its next store, number 64, in Yabucoa, and that it is coming with more in 2027.
