Thomas Rivera Schatz: No Rushed Appointments

Updated Jun 24, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Puerto Rico Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz stated that the Senate will not rush to evaluate appointments, including that of current Corrections and Rehabilitation Secretary Francisco Quiñones Rivera as a superior judge. This comes after Governor Jenniffer González sent four new nominations to the Senate, just seven days before the end of the ordinary session.

Quiñones Rivera's nomination is pending despite an ongoing investigation into alleged labor harassment and sexual harassment against a subordinate. Rivera Schatz emphasized that all nominations will be evaluated with the depth they deserve, regardless of who is nominated.

The governor also nominated Edison Avilés Deliz for another term as president of the Energy Bureau and Sylvia Ugarte Araujo for another term as commissioner. Quiñones Rivera will remain in his current position until the Senate acts on his nomination.
