The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) is waiting for laboratory results to determine the origin of a substance identified on Saturday at the Loíza Valley raw water intake, which has left around 11,000 customers without potable water service in Loíza and Canóvanas. According to AAA Executive President Luis González Delgado, the authority is cleaning the sedimentation area of the plant and has taken laboratory samples to analyze the substance.
The results are expected to be available tonight or early tomorrow morning. The Department of Health, led by Secretary Víctor Ramos Otero, has activated its public health protocols related to potable water and will decide when to resume operations.
The AAA estimates that between 10,000 and 11,000 clients are without potable water service. The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources will also investigate the riverbanks to determine if there is a source of contamination.
