The Municipality of Camuy has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) to revoke a stop-work order issued for a project to improve the Peñón Brusi recreational area. The municipality claims that the project has all necessary permits and that the DRNA's order is 'illegal, arbitrary, and unjustified'.
The order, issued on June 24, alleged that the work was being done 'in violation of the granted permit' due to issues with stormwater discharge points and pipes, and the need for a permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The municipality argues that the order does not specify which activities were violating the permit and that the work is a rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, without expansion or intervention in natural areas.
The project aims to resolve the problem of stormwater accumulation on the access road to the recreational area and includes the rehabilitation of sidewalks, electrical improvements, and recreational areas. The municipality was in the process of submitting information to the USACE to determine if the project required federal authorization.
