AAA Rules Out E. Coli Presence in Water Distributed from Canóvanas Plant

Updated Jul 3, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Luis González Delgado, executive president of the Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AAA), announced on Friday that initial concerns about the possible presence of E. coli in the Canóvanas Filtration Plant were due to a 'false positive' result. Additional tests conducted on Thursday in the distribution system yielded negative results for the bacteria, both at the filtration plant and in a sample taken directly from a customer.

The initial sample was taken from the distribution tank on June 30 and sent to a laboratory, where it showed high levels of coliformes. However, González Delgado explained that this water never reached the distribution network since the tank was out of operation at the time of sampling.

The AAA was required to issue a public alert due to the findings, but González Delgado stated that the sample was not representative of the water supplied to customers. He attributed the false positive result to interference during the initial sampling process.
