AAA Halts Operations at Canóvanas Water Filtration Plant Due to Suspicious Substance

Updated Jun 27, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) announced on Saturday that it has stopped operations at the Canóvanas water filtration plant after detecting a substance with an 'oil-like appearance' in the raw water intake at the Loíza Valley pumping station. As a precautionary measure and in compliance with safety protocols, the AAA has begun cleaning the raw water intake and inspecting the system to remove the substance and ensure safe conditions before resuming potable water production.

Affected areas may include Canóvanas, San Isidro, Loíza Valley, Estancias del Río, River Plantation, Villas de Loíza, and the municipality of Loíza, where customers may experience low water pressure or temporary interruptions. The AAA has not specified how long the work will take or how many customers will be affected.
