Updated Jul 3, 2026 · via Primera Hora

A suspected chemical leak at the Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, prompted a response from multiple agencies on Thursday night. Norberto Negrón Díaz, executive director of the Ports Authority, confirmed the incident and stated that the situation is under control.

The leak involved a chemical used for fire control, but authorities have not specified the substance, its intended use, or how the leak occurred. Negrón Díaz communicated with Aguadilla Mayor Julio Roldán Concepción, Police Commissioner Joseph González, and Department of Natural and Environmental Resources Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez to coordinate the response.

The airport's operations have not been affected, and the Police have established a traffic diversion as a precautionary measure. Mayor Roldán Concepción urged citizens to avoid the area and activated the municipality's Department of Public Safety to collaborate in the emergency response.
