Chemical Leak Reported at Aguadilla Airport

Updated Jul 3, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

A chemical leak was reported on Thursday night at the Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla, located on the grounds of the former Ramey naval base. Norberto Negrón Díaz, executive director of the Ports Authority, confirmed the incident on social media and stated that the situation is under control. The leak is associated with a fire-fighting chemical, but the type of chemical and its intended use have not been disclosed.

Negrón Díaz communicated with Aguadilla Mayor Julio Roldán Concepción, Police Superintendent Joseph González, and Department of Natural and Environmental Resources Secretary Waldemar Quilés Pérez. Roldán Concepción described the chemical as 'highly dangerous' and activated the Department of Public Safety to mitigate the situation. The Police have created a traffic diversion while removal and cleaning operations are completed.

No flights have been impacted, and air operations continue normally.
