Updated Jul 3, 2026 · via Primera Hora

Representative Swanny Enit Vargas has requested the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) to intervene urgently in Ensenada Honda beach in Culebra due to a significant accumulation of sargazo, which she described as an environmental emergency. The situation has caused the decomposition of organic material and reports of significant mortality of fish and other marine fauna.

Vargas Laureano asked the DRNA to conduct an immediate inspection and technical evaluation of the area, including water quality analysis and an assessment of the reported marine fauna mortality. She also requested the coordination of the removal of the sargazo using environmentally responsible methods and the disposal of the removed material and dead marine organisms according to environmental protocols.

The lawmaker emphasized that the environmental emergency requires immediate attention to avoid further damage to the ecosystem, as well as consequences for fishing, tourism, and public health, especially during the high tourist season. Vargas Laureano stressed that every day that passes increases the decomposition process of the sargazo and worsens the water quality and marine ecosystem conditions, and that it is essential to act with the urgency that this environmental emergency deserves.
