The case involving Jensen Medina Cardona and 33 co-defendants has reached a new phase, with the defense requesting to inspect the correctional institutions where the federal prosecution alleges a conspiracy to smuggle drugs took place. The defense team, representing 18 of the 34 co-defendants, filed a motion with the federal court, arguing that the government's case was built around these institutions and that they need to inspect them to prepare for the trial.
The motion was filed by lawyers for Medina Cardona, Juan Carlos Ortíz Vázquez, Elías Martínez Rivera, José Luis Audaín Rodríguez, Moises Mojica Torres, Ernesto Malavé Santiago, Jim Almodóvar Quirindongo, Ernesto Vergas Rodríguez, Abraham Rodríguez Cruz, Alexander Alvarado Almestic, Edwin Sánchez Rijos, Félix Serrano Román, Harry Acevedo Méndez, James Santana González, Kevin Hernández Ruiz, Miguel González Concepción, Anibal Ramírez Alicea, and Christian Candelario Feliciano. The institutions in question include Guerrero in Aguadilla, Las Cucharas in Ponce, and Bayamón 501.
The defense argues that the prosecution's theory relies on the alleged conspiracy taking place within the prisons, and that they cannot evaluate this theory without understanding the actual functioning of the correctional institutions. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for July 9.
