Puerto Rico Holds On to World Cup Dream with Authority

Puerto Rico's national men's basketball team secured a crucial 115-92 win over Bahamas, keeping their hopes alive in the FIBA 2027 World Cup qualifying tournament. Six Puerto Rican players scored in double figures, led by Jezreel de Jesús with 22 points, followed by Ysmael Romero with 21 points. Alfonso Plummer added 19 points, Ethan Thompson scored 17, Enrique Freeman contributed 13, and Isaiah Piñeiro had 11.

Despite the loss, Bahamas advanced to the next round along with Canada, which remains undefeated with a 6-0 record in Group B. Jamaica was eliminated with a 2-4 record. The second round of the tournament begins in August, with Puerto Rico facing Argentina on August 27 and hosting Uruguay on August 31.

The team, led by coach Carlos González, advanced as the third seed in Group B with a 2-4 record. Puerto Rico controlled the game, leading 57-47 at halftime and expanding their advantage to 13 points in the second half. Bahamas attempted a comeback but was unable to overcome the deficit.
