Updated Jul 8, 2026 · via Primera Hora

A 48-year-old man, Iván Gerardo Schuls Pimentel, was shot during an operation to serve an arrest warrant against him at the underground parking lot of the Plaza Inmaculada condominium on Ponce de León Avenue in Santurce. Officers from the Department of Correction's Arrest Unit, along with agents from the Puerto Rico Police's Special Arrests and Extraditions Division, went to the location to detain him. According to the report, Schuls Pimentel got into a vehicle and reversed it, striking the left arm of one of the correctional officers and another vehicle.

Officers then opened fire, hitting him in the shoulder. Although police initially said officers fired in response to shots from the suspect, the available information does not indicate he had a firearm or that one was recovered at the scene. It was not disclosed how many times he was struck, nor the extent of the injured officer's wounds or whether he required medical attention.

Schuls Pimentel was taken to a nearby hospital; no details on his condition were released. The arrest warrant had been issued in absentia on Monday by Judge Roberto Osoria of the Arecibo court, though the charges and bail were not specified. Six .40-caliber shell casings and one bullet were recovered at the scene.
