AAA Restores Water After Repairs at Sergio Cuevas Filtration Plant

Updated Jul 9, 2026 · via Primera Hora

The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) completed maintenance and repair work at the Sergio Cuevas Filtration Plant late Wednesday, after facing complications fixing a leak that had wasted about two million gallons of water. The work left roughly 183,000 customers without water for several consecutive days. AAA president, engineer Luis R.

González Delgado, said he expected service to be restored within 24 hours for areas near the plant, mainly Trujillo Alto, and within 72 hours for the rest of affected customers in San Juan, Carolina, Loíza and Canóvanas. Repairs were originally supposed to finish Tuesday, but crews needed extra time to safely fix a leak in a 48-inch pipe at the plant, finishing around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Afterward, AAA's operational team began gradually restoring the system to stabilize the distribution network. During the outage, AAA also replaced valves at the Carraízo Dam, performed maintenance on electrical substations, installed a new 30-inch valve at the plant, improved the chlorination system, and made various distribution network repairs. González Delgado said crews worked non-stop and that water production improvements at the plant were already being observed as restoration began.
