Puerto Rico Justice Dept. to File Charges Against Caregiver in Alleged Assault on 86-Year-Old at Las Piedras Care Home

Puerto Rico Secretary of Justice Lourdes L. Gómez Torres announced that the Humacao District Attorney's Office would file criminal charges Thursday against Eddie Mojica Pérez, 41, a caregiver accused of assaulting an 86-year-old patient at Casa Dorada, Inc., a long-term care facility in the Collores neighborhood of Las Piedras.

The specific charges had not yet been disclosed. The incident occurred Saturday, July 11, at 4:28 p.m. after a neighbor called police upon hearing the woman's screams and seeing the caregiver behave incoherently and pound on her door.

Police found the victim—partially blind and suffering from Alzheimer's—on the floor with abrasions and a head injury; she was taken to an emergency room. Mojica reportedly carried out what he described as a ritual so the patient
