Caregiver Arrested for Alleged Abuse of Elderly Woman in Las Piedras to Be Sent for Psychiatric Evaluation

A man arrested Saturday for allegedly abusing an 86-year-old resident at the Casa Dorada long-term care home in Las Piedras will be transferred to a psychiatric institution for a mental health evaluation, Puerto Rico Police confirmed Sunday afternoon. Lieutenant Josué Vázquez, assistant director of Humacao's Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC), said the suspect's family requested an order under Law 408, the Mental Health Law, which allows temporary detention and evaluation of a person believed to pose a risk to themselves or others.

He must be evaluated within 48 hours. The criminal investigation continues, with agents interviewing neighbors and checking nearby home security cameras for evidence.
