Guayama Residents Present Evidence of Coal Ash in Dredging Material to DRNA

Published Jul 21, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Leaders of environmental groups and residents of the Cimarrona neighborhood in Guayama presented evidence to the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) on Tuesday, showing that sediment deposits associated with the dredging of the Las Mareas port in Guayama contain coal ash particles. They argued that the agency's initial analysis of the material's management, which has already resulted in a notice of regulatory violation to the company in charge, does not fully account for its impact.

The residents are concerned about the environmental effects of the dredging project.
