Intense Lunar Eclipse to be Visible in Puerto Rico

Published Aug 18, 2026 · via Primera Hora

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible in Puerto Rico on the night of Thursday, August 27. According to the Sociedad de Astronomía del Caribe (SAC), the eclipse will be intense and appear almost like a total lunar eclipse, with 96% of the Moon in the Earth's umbra at its maximum point at 12:12 a.m. The SAC notes that the eclipse may take on an orange-red hue due to the Sun's light passing through the Earth's atmosphere.

The eclipse will begin at 10:33 p.m. and end at 1:51 a.m., with the most notable part occurring between 11:52 p.m. and 12:32 a.m. The SAC recommends viewing the eclipse from a location with a clear southern view, using a reclining chair to avoid neck strain. The event is related to the recent total solar eclipse seen in Spain on August 12, as the alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon that causes eclipses can last for several weeks.

The next total lunar eclipse visible in Puerto Rico will occur on the night of June 25, 2029.
