Guayama Police Region Sees Sharp Crime Increases in First Seven Months

Puerto Rico's first seven months of the year closed with fewer Type I crimes overall than the same period last year, but with 10 more homicides: 269 vs. 259. Other islandwide increases were human trafficking (+2) and burglaries (+8). The most notable improvements were in rapes (-41), robberies (-32) and vehicle theft (-143).

The Guayama police region faces the most serious problems, with Type I crimes up 17.7% and violent crimes up 27.9%; although homicides there fell by three, robberies rose by 15 and assaults by 32, and illegal appropriations rose from 108 to 120. Carolina also shows problems, with Type I crimes up 10% and nine more homicides than in 2025, plus considerable increases in assaults, burglaries and illegal appropriations. Aguadilla shows the most notable improvement, with a 27.9% drop in Type I crimes and declines in nearly every category except burglaries; illegal appropriations fell from 236 to 154.

By municipality, San Juan leads in homicides with 45, followed by Bayamón (16), Carolina and Caguas (seven each), and Ponce (six). Among smaller municipalities, Loíza leads with 10, tied with Trujillo Alto; Canóvanas has eight and Coamo six.
