The police arrested Joel Ortiz Cumba, a 30-year-old resident of Humacao, for possessing a stolen vehicle. Officer Braulio I. Sánchez Castro stopped a 2013 gray Nissan Versa at the intersection of Desvío Nicanor Vázquez and PR-3 in Humacao and found that it had been reported stolen on August 10 in the metropolitan area.
Prosecutor Miguel García Rodríguez filed criminal charges against Ortiz Cumba, and Judge Yumaira Serrano Murcelo set a $50,000 bond, which he did not post. Ortiz Cumba was taken to the Bayamón Correctional Complex until his preliminary hearing on September 1. He had also been charged with license falsification in April, but the disposition of that case is unknown.
The investigation was led by Officer Jesús M. Herrera Gómez under the supervision of Sergeant Yomarie Calderón González and in coordination with Lieutenant Félix R. Morales González.
