Edwin Rivera Maldonado, a 63-year-old resident of Utuado, was charged with the crimes of illegal appropriation of a vehicle and mistreatment of an elderly person. According to the investigation, on August 21, Rivera Maldonado went to his 93-year-old father's residence in the Viví Abajo neighborhood of Utuado and took $400 in cash, a keychain, and a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage. It is alleged that he also used aggressive and obscene language towards his father.

Prosecutor Mayra Morales Antonrieti presented the charges and evidence to Judge Francisco Ortiz Caraballo of the Utuado Tribunal, who determined that there was cause for arrest and set a $80,000 bond, which Rivera Maldonado did not pay. Rivera Maldonado was taken to the Las Cucharas Correctional Complex in Ponce until the preliminary hearing, scheduled for September 3, 2026. The vehicle was recovered.

Additionally, Rivera Maldonado has an outstanding arrest warrant in the state of Pennsylvania for robbery, but extradition was not requested.
