The 2027 class of Puerto Rican baseball players eligible for the Major League Baseball draft appears promising, according to three scouts who observed several prospects during the Buzzer Beater Baseball Classic in Caguas. Scouts Jhonny Ramos of the Kansas City Royals, Aníbal Zayas of the Baltimore Orioles, and Rubén Escalera of the Athletics agreed that there is a group of players worth following in the coming months, although much development is still needed before the draft.
One notable player is 17-year-old Dariel Carrión, a right-handed catcher who attends the Carlos Beltrán Baseball Academy and has a college commitment to Florida State. Carrión impressed with his throwing arm, recording a 1.78-second time to second base, and also made a good impression with his bat.
Ramos noted that Carrión's batting is particularly important, as Puerto Rican players must be able to hit against high-level pitchers in organized baseball. Zayas considered Carrión the top prospect in the class so far, citing his offensive and defensive attributes and potential to be a big leaguer.
