The Salinas Municipal Legislature has approved a resolution requesting the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) to evaluate and establish properly marked and signed pedestrian crossings in two high-traffic areas, particularly used by elderly individuals. The measure, presented by legislator Emilio Nieves Torres of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP), initially targets the entrance to the Salinas Elderly housing complex and Veredas de Salinas on PR-3.
An amendment added a pedestrian crossing on PR-180, Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos Avenue, to improve safety for seniors, students, and residents accessing the commercial center and other services. The resolution also asks DTOP to consider additional safety measures, such as warning signs and interventions to increase visibility and protection for pedestrians. Former legislator Litzy Alvarado Antonetty noted that concerns about the lack of pedestrian crossings had been raised previously, citing difficulties faced by Salinas Elderly residents.
Nieves Torres emphasized that the resolution's approval is a first step and urged DTOP to evaluate both areas and establish the pedestrian crossings and corresponding safety measures.
